Please note our offices and warehouses will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Stitches can be painful and if you’ve taken up running recently then you may suffer from stitches frequently, this can be related to your breathing style.
If you are new to running then you may be breathing quickly and shallow, this could lead to frequent stitches.
When your suffering from a stitch the first step to take to relieve pain is push your fingers into the area where you’re feeling the stitch.
Changing your breathing pattern, for example taking a deep breath in quick, then holding your breath for seconds at a time and forcibly exhaling.
If you are still suffering from a stitch the you will need to stop running and walk briefly for a few seconds, then return to running when the stitch can no longer be felt.
If you are new to running and are trying to prevent suffering from stitches, then follow these tips:
Drink water for hydration instead of sugary drinks
Always warm up before a run
Avoid eating within an hour of running
Maintain a good posture while running
Avoid shallow breathing. Breathe deeply from your stomach and not your chest.
