Ankle support vs ankle brace - what’s the difference?

When choosing an ankle brace or ankle support, it's important that you choose one that is tailored to your needs, but which one is best for you?  An ankle brace is used for the aftercare of ankle injuries, including post-op, instabilities and rehabilitation.  Whereas an ankle support is more commonly used for moderate sprains, tendonitis or arthritis.  If you take part in sports or physical activities, then an ankle brace or support is a good choice to keep your joints protected during those important matches, not only this, it can help aid recovery and protect from further injury.

Common ankle injuries that would require an ankle support or ankle brace:

Achilles tendon injuries - The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body, stretching from the bones of your heel to your calf muscles. Injury strikes when it is torn or completely ruptured and this can become extremely painful.  For these types of injury, we recommend an ankle wrap or brace for maximum support, which will aid recovery and circulation to the affected area.

Plantar Fasciitis - Ok so not technically an ankle injury but it is the most common form of heel pain and can be treated with ankle supports and wraps.  The plantar fascia is the ligament that connects your heel bone to your toes while supporting the arch of your foot.  Therefore, when it is strained it can become swollen and inflamed. We also recommend using a slant board calf stretcher.

Arthritis - Ankle arthritis is common in the small joints of the foot and ankle.  It is a disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness to the joints. Therefore, depending on the severity, we recommend using a wraparound ankle support or an ankle brace for maximum effect.

Sprains - Extremely common in the sports world, there are 3 types of ankle sprains that can occur, lateral, medial or high, lateral being the most common, so whether its injury prevention or treatment we recommend an elasticated wraparound ankle support for flexibility, warmth and compression, plus freeze sprays for instant relief and to reduce inflammation.

Types of ankle supports and braces:

Lace up - A semi-rigid support that can be tightened according to the level of support required.

Post injury - A very rigid brace that is not intended for functional activity.  Commonly used after surgery or serious injury.

Rigid - Can be used as part of rehabilitation.  They allow the ankle to move up and down but prevent it from rolling out.
