What is the Donjoy Playmaker II  Knee Brace?

The Donjoy Playmaker II is a new and improved design of the original Donjoy Playmaker Knee Support. It's enhanced design boasts more comfort and wear friendly features, whilst retaining its main benefits which made the brace so popular. The Donjoy Playmaker II is a little longer than the standard knee supports on the market, with its long geared hinges running down the inside and outside of the knee. The main added benefit of the length of these hinges, is the level of offloading support they offer. As the hinges are geared, they are also connected with each other, meaning the weight and pressure that travels through the leg, gets taken on by the hinges, and leaves the knee relieved.

As the The Donjoy Playmaker II Knee Brace is marginally longer than other braces, it has a slightly tapered thigh, which means the top of the product is a bit wider than the rest of the brace, opening up for your thigh for a supportive but comfortable fit.

The Donjoy Playmaker II is a pull-on sleeve design, which tend to offer a higher level of support as they do not have to be manually tightened up, however they can become difficult for those with mobility issues to put the brace on.

With the new improved design, Donjoy have added two new aspects of this product. Spacer fabric has been added to the front of the brace to offer better padding and improve air flow, whilst the back panel is made from Hi10™ fabric to help prevent bunching behind the knee, and increase the wearers comfort.

When can I use the Donjoy Playmaker II Knee Brace?

As this is a High-Ultimate level of support, the Donjoy Playmaker II Knee Brace will cater to higher level injuries, especially to the ligaments, such as the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL. One of the most common problems with ligament problems, is the weakness the knee can and often does feel. Having and ACL injury may mean your leg hyper-extends during sports, or even day-day activities. Due to the design of the Donjoy Playmaker II's hinges, the do not allow for the knee to go over on itself, collapse, or even twist, so all of the dangerous unnatural movement is stopped, and the regular range of movement the knee should have is not restricted.

Suffers of arthritis may benefit from the Donjoy Playmaker II knee support, as the thick, but breathable material will provide a great level of compression around the knee, creating warmth within the knee joint, and preventing swelling. Arthritis is notoriously at it's worst when the problematic joint is cold, allowing the area to seize up and start aching and becoming painful, the Playmaker II will provide the relief as well as the offloading support when walking around, relieving the knee even more.

What is the benefit of the Playmaker II with the FourcePoint Hinge?

Aggressive eccentric contractions of the quadriceps produce significant anterior tibial translation and can injure the Anterior Cruciate Ligamant (ACL) or permanently stretch out the ACL graft i.e. strong movements of the thigh muscles can cause the lower leg to slide within the knee joint. Additional studies show quadriceps-intensive activities should be avoided at joint angles, particularly the last 30 degrees of extension, when strains are at a maximum, so if you do an activity where your knee is slightly bent you put more strain on the ACL. DonJoy has developed a tool to address maximising ACL and ACL graft protection in these “at risk” positions.

Small knee flexion angles at initial contact during landing tasks may contribute to ACL injuries. The FourcePoint hinge can be used to control joint range-of-motion by increasing the knee flexion (Bending)angle during landing to result in a decrease of anterior shear force on the ACL by 9-13 percent.

The DonJoy FourcePoint utilises a spring mechanism in the hinge to apply gradually increasing resistance during knee extension (straightening). The resistance engages in the last 25 degrees of extension (relative to the extension stop).

Three adjustment settings on the hinge allow for varying amounts of resistance to meet the specifications of the knee joint and the patient’s comfort. The hinge may also be turned “off” for no resistance or “on” for resistance.

The resistance serves three critical roles:

  1. Reduces the time spent near full extension or in the “at risk” position.
  2. Increases the posterior load applied by the brace on the tibia to prevent anterior tibial translation (because it pushes against the back of the calf the lower leg cannot slip within the joint).
  3. Eliminates the extension shock felt when extending into a rigid stop.

What size of the Donjoy Playmaker II Knee Brace do I need?

To measure up for this brace, you need to start by finding the top of your knee cap, then measuring up the thigh 6 inches, from the kneecap. Then measure around the circumference of the thigh, at this point.

This measurement will correspond to a size below;

Size ChartThigh (cms)Thigh (inches)
X Small33-3913-15.5
Small39-4715.5-18.5
Medium47-5318.5-21
Large53-6021-23.5
X Large60-6723.5-26.5

The length of the brace is about 41cm in total, with a lower leg length from the crease of the knee of about 17cm. This could just clear a ski boot.
