Defibrillators
The latest British Standards update, BS8599-1:2019+A1:2026, provides updated guidance for workplace first aid, helping employers select equipment based on workplace risks and workforce size. As part of this update, organisations are encouraged to review their Automated External Defibrillator (AED) provision as part of their workplace emergency preparedness and first aid risk assessment.
Having a life-saving defibrillator readily available can significantly improve the chances of survival following a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA can happen suddenly and without warning, including to people with no known history of heart problems. Early CPR and rapid defibrillation are critical, with survival rates decreasing by around 7–10% for every minute treatment is delayed.
It is crucial that CPR and defibrillation are applied as soon as possible following a cardiac arrest. Defibrillators are available in two versions: semi-automatic, which analyses the patient's heart rhythm and prompts the user to administer a shock when necessary, and fully automatic, which delivers the shock without the user's input when required.
