10 Fun Facts about the Masters Tournament

With `The Masters` kicking off on April 9th 2015 at Augusta golf course in Georgia, here are 10 fun facts about the tournament to get you excited for the biggest event on the yearly golfing calendar! 10 – The Augusta National Golf Course is a par 72 course and spans 7,435 yards 9   – Tiger Woods is the youngest player ever to have won the tournament at 21 years, 3 months and 14 days! 8   – The winner of the tournament is presented with a green blazer which they can wear home but have to return to the club the following year. 7   – The Masters was officially named this in 1939 6   – It took until 2012 for 2 females to be admitted as members of the Augusta National Golf Club. Their names were Condoleezza Rice who was a former Secretary of State, and Private Investment Banker Darla Moore. 5   – Each hole on the course is named after a plant or shrub – for example hole number 3 is called “Flowering Crab Apple”! 4   – General Eisenhower was the only US President to be a member of the club 3   – The first African American to be admitted into the club was Ron Townsend in 1990 2   – During 1943, 1944 and 1945 the tournament wasn’t played due to the WWII. Instead, turkey and cattle were raised on the grounds to help with the war effort. 1   – The first winner of the tournament was Horton Smith in 1934.
