BS8599-1 Eye Wash First Aid Upgrade Refill

BS8599-1 is the British Standard that provides guidance on workplace first aid kits, including the recommended contents, kit sizes, and the type of first aid provision required based on workplace hazards, employee numbers, and levels of risk.

The 2026 amendments to BS8599-1 now incorporate eye wash first aid kits and guidance on when they should be provided within the workplace. The updated guidance recommends that employers provide eye wash first aid kits wherever a risk to eyes has been identified and workplace first aid kits are present.

Modern workplaces continue to present a wide range of eye injury risks, from dust, debris, and chemicals through to cleaning products, manufacturing processes, and maintenance activities. The updated BS8599-1 guidance reflects the importance of rapid eye irrigation and immediate treatment following an eye injury incident.

The amendments also recognise that suitable eye wash provision should be clearly identifiable, easily accessible, and readily available alongside existing workplace first aid arrangements.

Employers remain responsible for carrying out a suitable workplace risk assessment and ensuring adequate first aid provision is available for the hazards identified on site.

Where a risk to eye health has been identified, BS8599-1:2026 guidance recommends that dedicated eye wash first aid kits are provided alongside workplace first aid kits to help support rapid treatment and minimise the severity of eye injuries.

Existing eye wash kits may also require upgrading or replenishment to help align with current recommendations, particularly where eye wash pods or sufficient irrigation products are not already included.

Existing workplace eye wash kits can often be upgraded by adding or replacing individual contents to help align with current BS8599-1 recommendations.

In the event of a workplace incident, organisations may find it more difficult to demonstrate adequate provision if recognised standards and recommendations have not been followed.
